For some odd reason, my computer is doing some weird stuff regarding my external hard drive. The other day, I tried to open a music folder I'd just gotten from a friend, and it worked fine. The next day, I tried to open it again, and it asked me what program I wanted to open it with. When I checked the propperties, it said, under "file type", it was a "file". Had no other explanation what so ever! Its size was "32.0 kb". Today I tried to open a different folder, one i hadn't visited in a few days, but again, one I'd gotten recently, and the same thing happened. What's going on? This is really upsetting! Luckily, I've been abel to replace the folders, but one of these days, I wont be able to can someone please help?
I'd suggest doing a check on the drive. Go to the drive properties, go to the tools tab, and click the button that says check for errors or something like that. It'll bring up a dialog box. Check both checkboxes, and click start. It'll probably take a while.See what the results are at the end. (Another easier way to do it i nmy opinion that will probably tell you more is to go to the command prompt, and type in chkdsk driveLetter: /r, for example chkdsk e: /, and press enter. This gives you much more text information. IT may ask you whether you want to dismount the drive and such, just press Y and enter. Hope that helps a bit.
What does it mean to "dismount"?
